Towards Predictable Precision Manipulation of Unknown Objects with Underactuated Fingers

چکیده
This paper describes a new concept in underactuated hand design, motivated by a study of parallel mechanisms. Inspired by the end-effector motion and system reconfiguration in parallel wrists, we propose a morphology of fingers such that during fingertip precision manipulation the instantaneous screw axes, which describe the displacement of the grasped object respect to the palm of the hand, always intersect at the same known fixed point regardless of the object’s particularities. A physical hand was built to evaluate the feasibility of the design concept in improving precision manipulation capabilities while preserving powergrasping functionality. The tendon-driven hand is underactuated, with one actuator for each of the two-degree-of-freedom fingers, and passive rotary fingertips are used to minimize slip at contact points during manipulation. Experimental results with the hand demonstrate the effectiveness of the concept, thus encouraging further research in the area

Underactuated Gripper that is able to Convert from Precision to Power Grasp by a Variable Transmission Ratio
This paper investigates the possibility of converting grasped objects from precision grasps to power grasps using a variable transmission ratio for an underactuated finger. To this effect, a variable radius pulley was designed. A simulation study is presented to analyse grasping behaviour and a potential energy method is used to predict the equilibrium positions of finger and object. With this ...
متن کاملStable, open-loop precision manipulation with underactuated hands
This paper discusses dexterous, within-hand manipulation with differential-type underactuated hands. We discuss the fact that not only can this class of hands, which to date have been considered almost exclusively for adaptive grasping, be utilized for precision manipulation, but also that the reduction of the number of actuators and constraints can make within-hand manipulation easier to imple...
متن کاملA compliant, underactuated hand for robust manipulation
This paper introduces the iRobot-Harvard-Yale (iHY) Hand, an underactuated hand driven by 5 actuators that is capable of performing a wide range of grasping and in-hand repositioning tasks. This hand was designed to address the need for a durable, inexpensive, moderately dexterous hand suitable for use on mobile robots. The primary focus of this paper will be on the novel simplified design of t...
متن کاملOn the force capability of underactuated fingers
This paper studies the force capability of a particular class of underactuated fingers. Force capability is defined as the ability to create an external wrench onto a fixed object. The concept of underactuation in robotic fingers, with fewer actuators than degrees of freedom (DOF) through the use of springs and mechanical limits, allows the hand to adjust itself to an irregularly shaped object ...
متن کاملPassive Non-Prehensile Manipulation of a Specific Object on Predictable Helix Path Based on Mechanical Intelligence
Object manipulation techniques in robotics can be categorized in two major groups including manipulation with and without grasp. The aim of this paper is to develop an object manipulation method where in addition to being grasp-less, the manipulation task is done in a passive approach. In this method, linear and angular positions of the object are changed and its manipulation path is controlled...
